OMR sheet scanning reads the bubbles candidates fill in on a printed form and turns them into data. Instead of examiners checking every answer by hand, the filled sheets are scanned, the software detects which options are marked, compares them with the answer key and calculates scores. The same method works for registration forms, feedback forms and surveys, wherever people choose from fixed options.
Older OMR systems needed dedicated machines and sheets pre-printed on special paper. Desktop OMR software works differently: sheets can be designed on a computer, printed on an ordinary laser printer and read with a standard image scanner that has an automatic document feeder. This lowers the entry cost for schools and institutes and lets you change the sheet layout for each exam. Once the data is electronic, it can be analysed in ways that are not practical on paper, such as question-wise difficulty and section-wise performance.
